Masterclass: Treating Religious and Spiritual Trauma

This comprehensive two-day training equips clinicians with the ethical frameworks, conceptual knowledge, and practical interventions needed to provide autonomy-first, culturally competent care to survivors of religious and spiritual trauma. Beginning with a theoretical foundation of the key terminology, common signs and symptoms, coercive group dynamics, and considerations for the therapeutic relationships, clinicians will learn the core competencies needed to address this complex form of trauma. Building on this groundwork, the focus will shift to direct clinical application, examining unique considerations for vulnerable populations and intersecting traumas. Attendees will gain a suite of evidence-based assessment tools, psychoeducational resources, and useful modalities, enabling them to help clients navigate traumatic memories, dismantle shame, process complex grief, and reclaim personal autonomy.

2-Day Training: Clinical Interventions for Religious & Spiritual Trauma
October 2 & 9, 2026
This 6-hour clinical training split into two days will provide mental health professionals with the practical skills and clinical interventions they need to competently work with survivors of religious trauma and spiritual abuse. Attendees will learn to assess the unique impacts of these experiences and use trauma-informed, client-centered approaches to facilitate healing and growth. The content will be organized in four sections including (1) Clinical Competencies, (2) Interviewing and Assessment, (3) Treatment Goals, and (4) Theories and Modalities. Useful in-session tools will be shared throughout the training to provide attendees with practical applications.

It takes knowledge, empathy, and self-awareness to support clients who are unpacking experiences in purity culture and religious patriarchy. The unique systemic factors of spiritualized sex and gender-based abuse inflict a complex web of trauma that impacts a survivor's identity, sexuality, relationships, and more. This clinical training will address the ways that both women and men are affected by these experiences and offer useful clinical tools for therapists to meet their clients where they are. Facilitator, Anna Clark Miller, takes a religiously neutral approach that offers both clients and clinicians the freedom to seek healing on their own terms.

Religious/Spiritual Trauma: A Comprehensive Treatment Guide

This full-day training will equip clinicians with the specialized knowledge and clinical competencies necessary to effectively assess and treat spiritual and religious trauma. Participants will explore core concepts—such as shame, high-control groups, and purity culture—while learning to recognize the multifaceted cognitive, emotional, relational, and somatic symptoms that clients experience. Across six detailed modules, this training addresses the therapeutic relationship, clinician biases, safety risks, and intersecting client identities, alongside targeted assessment tools, psychoeducational strategies, and practical in-session interventions. Ultimately, the evidence-based treatment approaches covered in this training will provide clinicians with a roadmap to offer culturally competent care that promotes healing and autonomy for survivors of religious and spiritual trauma.
